Improving Access to Social Protection for Families of Children with Severe Disabilities in Uganda
Sub-title ImageDURATION: 11 MONTHS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION
Children with disabilities (CWDs) in Uganda have the highest absolute number among Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as reported by Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development (MLGSD). CWDs aged 2-4 years and 5-17 years have the prevalence rate of 4% and 7.8% respectively. Ugandan households with PWDs incur more expenses than families without PWDs. These households incur 40% more than their counterparts without PWDs on household expenses and households with CWDs incur on average 30% more on education related cost and its exacerbated by the impairment level of CWDs causing expense to even rise further on average up to 50% more. With these high expenses incurred, another burden on household with PWDs is poverty with half living in extreme poverty and three quarters living in poverty (MLGSD, 2020).
The project on “National Child Disability Benefit” facilitated an inclusive process in which UPFPWDs members are involved in making sure that the burden on CWDs and their families are lessened.
OBJECTIVES
  1. Improve the knowledge of UPFPWDs members on the importance of national child disability benefit.
  2. To ascertain the level of income that should be used to support children with disabilities.
ACTIVITIES

Objective 1: Members of UPFPWDs were trained on the importance of national child disability benefit.

Objective 2: Interviews were conducted with UPFPWDs members to ascertain the amount of monthly income that would be appropriate to support children with disabilities.

PARTNERSHIP CREATED
UPFPWDs was able to create partnership with RAISE, NUDIPU and UPFSP and we still work together in addressing challenges faced by person with disabilities (PWDs).
